The Conventions of a thriller.

Mise en scene:
Low key lighting to show the importance of the character in the bath. The low key lighting will highlight the fact that an incident has happened and there is a mystery that needs to be solved.

This convention is used to get the audiences attention on a certain aspect of the film.  We are using it to make the audience think that the person in the bath is obviously dead however when he wakes up they know it's a dream but it leaves them asking questions whether the dream will come true or not.

Sound:
The sound we are using for our thriller is slow paced because it creates a calm atmosphere which contrasts with the scene. The use of the slow music makes the film seem peaceful and when the audience see the scene they wonder why the music is so slow paced.

The music will be put in slow motion so the audience have a chance to notice the extreme detail and acknowledge the situation that the person is in. As the music starts to quicken the pace of the editing becomes quicker from him struggling then as he sits up the music stops and the person sits up.

Cinematography:

The shots are going to vary but mostly using close ups to show detail but not giving away too much. The shots that use the close ups are going to show him being in the bath and him struggling to break free and through close ups they see how desperate the character actually is.

We will also use a few high angles to show how the status contrasts with the modern day roles of men and women. Due to the high angle showing the girl drowning the boy it makes the audience wonder how she got in that situation and when the close up comes of him waking up the audience are left wondering his status.

Characters:

There are only going to be two characters in the opening sequence to show the protagonist and the female. The audience is left wondering who is the protagonist because it's the female who strangles the male which herefore puts the focus on her.

However when the male wakes up the audience know that he is the main character because the focus is from then on on him, but also the audience know that the female that done the drowning will also play a big part in the film.
